Life as a grad student
… is not as fun as I thought it would be. It’s always work, work, work - 9 to 5.
The last two weeks: I was busy finishing up experiments because the whole lab will be moving to the new building.
Last week: Moving a whole lot of stuff from the old 70s lab to a new funky one. Thus this was how my old bench looked like after packing:
I must say that it looked much more organized...

A dialogue with iblis la'natullah
In his tafsir in Ruh al-Bayan, Shaykh Isma`il Haqqi relates the following hadith from Ibn `Abbas (r) :
One time, the Prophet (s) went out of the masjid, and as he went out, he saw Iblis approaching. The Prophet (s) said, “What brought you to the door of my masjid?” Shaytan said, “I came by [order of] Allah (swt).”
Note here that even Iblis believes in Allah (swt) and he is a unitarian...

And I'm back again
Honestly I miss Tumblr-ing.
I occasionally logged in and browse through for less than 5 mins before being interrupted by ze supervizor asking me about the experiment/ presentation/ review that I was supposed to do.
The boss is away now. Yeay!
But he’ll be back next week. Boo!
Insya’Allah I’ll try to keep this blog going. Hopefully I won’t go on a very long hiatus again...

Be patient with beautiful patience
I am on hiatus due to:
Loads of experiments
My research plan review is due next week so I’ve been editing and re-editing the same document over and over again for the past two weeks
Trying very hard to catch up my Quran readings
I think my supervisor is a sadist.
This year’s Ramadhan is definitely teaching me about patience. Fasabrun jameel!

Right at this moment, people are arguing about the start of Ramadhan on Facebook. Most of these people don’t even know how the imams decide on it anyway. :S
We haven’t even started to fast and people are already arguing. Sigh. Not a good start guys. Not a good start. Take some chill pills will ya? And by that I mean: make some dzikr and calm down.
This is why I hate Facebook.

Ramadan Prep: Let The Hearts Submit
forthesakeofallah:
Don’t focus too much on doing good things while forgetting the pleasure of Allah swt. This means that you should not put too much effort into doing good things that will not essentially win over Allah’s full pleasure.
So many people get caught up in doing small deeds without even fulfilling the obligatory deeds first.
This religion was meant to be easy. Don’t overburden...
Inspirational Islamic Tumblrs
praise-allah:
This is especially for the-ummah! Hehe. Tumblr has such an amazing Muslim community throughout the world. We can see people from Singapore, New York, Palestine, United Kingdom, Germany, Kuala Lumpur, Saudi Arabia reblogging the same thing and communicating, Masha’Allah that’s just beautiful.
These blogs have helped me increase my Islamic knowledge through most creative ways....

Somehow my followers had surprisingly increased within these few days subhanallah! So salam to the new followers! :)
I’ve been thinking of doing a weekly appreciation post on Islamic art for a while now. I may not be a professional art critique but I do LOVE artsy stuff. So insya’Allah I’m starting this project(?) this week and I’ll be promoting Islamic artists, designers...
Live From Saudi Arabia – The Prettiest Pearl
hamzamakonnen:
In 2008, during my first stay in the Kingdom, I observed up close a struggle far more severe than anything I had ever encountered in the States. This was not my struggle, but rather it was the struggle of many of the laborers working in the Kingdom. One day while I was leaving the local mosque for the pre-dawn prayer, an migrant worker from Sri Lanka named Armanallah invited me...

I’m sorry I was on hiatus. To the new followers, in case you haven’t read the short info on my page, I am a 23 year old lady girl who is working on a research project and not a 13 year old who can sit in front of the computer browsing the internet all day. So despite the strong urge to update my tumblog, I still need to finish my work and there’s a conference coming up in another...
The triple filter test
hakuna-mataataa:
During the golden Abbasid period, one of the scholars in Baghdad, the capital of Muslim caliphate at that time, was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem. One day an acquaintance met the great scholar and said, “Do you know what I just heard about your friend?” “Hold on a minute,” the scholar replied. “Before telling me anything I’d like you to pass a little test. It’s...
Books, wasted. :'(
My uni newspaper reported that the University of Sydney dumped 500,000 books last week (that’s equivalent to 19 km worth of shelf space).
The University of New South Wales had thrown away thousands of books early this year. Apparently their policy states that they can throw away about 50,000 books a year.
In 1995, University of Western Sydney buried 10,000 books in landfill.
